Goal Third Zone Defence

In game two of the Taini Jamison series, the Silver Ferns delivered a textbook example of structured zone defence. Rather than chasing players (or intercepts), the defensive unit applied layered pressure through the court and forced South Africa well away from the circle edge.

The key detail was the timing of the switch between GK and GD. As the ball carrier hesitated under pressure, the defenders adjusted their positioning seamlessly, cutting off the driving lane and denying the feed. The result was a forced held ball, created purely through communication, shape and disciplined spacing.

This clip is a strong example of how netball defensive plays don’t always rely on big aerial moments. Controlled footwork, smart zoning and clear verbal cues can manufacture turnover ball just as effectively. For coaches, it’s a great teaching tool for defensive structure inside the goal third.
